Leonard was the son of  Nathaniel and Margaret Landis Smith. Nathaniel was a brother to George Smith  Helen Walters Jennings  great grandfather born Dec 25,1825 in PA. Nathaniel was born 9 Jan 1830 and died 3 July 1895 Margaret Landis Smith was born 22 Dec 1832 and died 3 Oct. 1894.
